Discrimination Within Modern Technology Through Social Media Platforms.

                                                  By: Nour Judeh

Social Media through advanced Technology has caused deaths such as (Suicide homicide, Murders, Human trafficking, Rape, and many more deviant acts).

Also, Social media caused “Degeneration” to marginalized group of individuals, (MicroAggression)mainly those that belong to the African American, Muslim, and Mexican groups/ communities.

INTRODUCTION:

Social Media has become the go-to outlet for racial and cultural Racism/ Discrimination. In recent years, due to the improvement of technology, many people have found ways to target others of different cultures and ethnicity’s by going completely anonymous. Thus, resulting in major conflicts between racial and social classes throughout the world and mainly in the United States.

Discrimination has made its way into becoming a modern social norm. Unfortunately, more and more people are referring to technology (Social Media) to surface their thoughts, opinions, and comments on ones Culture and way of life. Narrowing down my main focus on the broad topic of Culture, I aimed towards the way people decide to portray their feelings about a certain group of people through their social media. Through recent years, i have noticed that many people are influenced to talk negatively about specific types of people.

Throughout my research, i found a great amount of hate and racial profiling towards Blacks, Muslims, and Mexicans. Within the past year, with the presidential election that had just passed many people were then inspired to believe certain accusations among specific groups of people.

Newly advanced Technology has made discrimination towards particular groups of individuals more prominent within Modern Society.

Social Media has played a large roll on discrimination towards specific groups of people. Recently, people within the African American, Hispanic, and Muslim groups/ communities have been targeted through Social Media.  Many Pubic figures (People with a large fan base or audience) have been using their platform to promote hate and racial discriminatory posts to persuade their followers into believing the false accusations towards these certain groups of individuals. Thus, creating a substantial amount of danger through arguments, debates, and controversy within society. Technology is the key focus of this connection between Discrimination and Social Media. since you need internet through technology to connect to the outside world of social networking.

All my below source connects to the \major of general topic of culture, and also aim to target my Sub-topic of Discrimination through technology (Social Media).

Many often wonder…

  • Why do people feel obligated to spread or share their own opinion about one’s race and ethnicity whether it be good or bad, throughout their Social Media?

Although the answer to this question may differ between different groups of individuals, we know that its because they are constantly being influenced by other people preferably ones form a higher social class.

We have others of higher political and social status spreading all this fake and negative information creating a more dangerous environment for others. Its sad to see that many people do not understand how their comments and statements can lead others to depression and suicide.

Annotated Bibliography:

1) The Sociology of discrimination: Racial Discrimination in employment, housing, credit, and consumer markets.

Pager, Devah. Shepherd, Hana. “Racial Discrimination in employment, housing, credit, and consumer markets.” Published in (2008).

Within this article written by Devah Pager and Hana Shepherd, a lot is said about the largely growing and controversial topic of racial Discrimination. This source has a great amount of information about the topic of discrimination. Within this source, i found analysis based information about how discrimination is being looked at by different types of people including those who work in law. There are many other topics that are being covered on this site such as Housing, Credit Markets, Consumer Markets, etc and they all relate and differ between one’s race, culture and ethnicity. Gladly, This source correlates with both my Main topic Culture and Sub-Topic Discrimination because it connects all the social problems specific minority groups go through and brings a whole new point out of it.

From reading this data packed scholarly article, it has opened my general idea of how the general American system if programmed to work and can often manipulate others simply for the non-consumers own benefit.

This source that i found has been one of the most informative sources that i had come across. an important section that really caught my attention i was…

“Misconceptions and prejudices manufactured and disseminated through various channels such as the media included references to a “brute” image of Black males. In the 21st century, this negative imagery of Black males has frequently utilized the negative connotation of the terminology “thug.” In recent years, law enforcement agencies have unreasonably used deadly force on Black males allegedly considered to be “suspects” or “persons of interest.”

In this passage it talks about how media now looks at Black individuals. Many people may believe that labeling black people as “Brutes” and “Thugs” isn’t such a problem. lets look at the definition of these two discriminatory words.

  • The Definition of “Brute” is “A savagely violent person or animal”.
  • The Definition of “Thug” is “A violent person, especially a criminal”.

To generalize these two words towards all African American people is undoubtedly racist and discriminatory. Social Media now view Black males as Brutes, and Thugs causing an increased amount of tension and conflict within society.

Ruiz, Joseline.  Has Social Media Made a Positive or Negative Impact on racism? Published in (2017).

This video compared the timeline of racism and the changed that have been inspired by society. it talks about how social media like Facebook Instagram twitter, etc… are the liberal media outlets for one to express their feelings, thoughts, and emotions whether they be good or bad.in this video it is said that a upside to social media is a great way to do something positive such as create blog posts, social media posts and videos talking about this controversial topic of cultural discrimination.

4) This Will Change The Way You Think Racism Experiment

“Monthly Winners” ” This will change the ay you think Racism Experiment” Published recently in (2014)

I have come across a great video to show how people differentiate specific individuals simply based on the way they look depending on if they look like a minority. As you saw in the video. two kids came across a social experiment to see how people will react and communicate with both a White and a Black kid.

This video relates to my topic and sub-topic because you see how these kids are creating videos to show the different cultural communications whether they be good or bad. these types of social experiments receive a large amount of reactions from many people of course a mix of good and bad.

Within this source, I found some great ideas about how the topic revolving about one’s race and ethnicity is being shared and talked about. Basically, anyone can give their own opinion about another person’s individuality and creates many arguments and conflicts on that website database. Thus, resulting in depression and suicide. And the term oppression, is now referred to as cyber bullying. I thought that was an interesting cover up term in modern society. This source correlates great with my Main and sub topic. Social Media has been around for quite sometime now and with more and more people making accounts and others just discovering these media outlets, all that comes may be completely unexpected. In my personal experience, i have notice that many people have now decided to make anonymous accounts targeting specific minority groups mainly within the United States. this connects to my topic because it presents both aspects of the main point Social Media and Discrimination/ Racism.

“Members thus each become the hub of their own social network, and they can choose to share messages or other digital content with some or all of those (often designated as “friends” or “followers”) in their network. Those receiving the content may be encouraged to “like” it in response, to comment in reply to it, or to share it with their own network.”

This was a great point that as been brought up because t important to see exactly how these most often false rumors, accusations, and assumptions are spread out and make it to the more general mainstream media.

On this site, it is explained that “It’s becoming an increasingly important question. The number of people fired over social-media posts is rising, and many employers look closely at a job candidate’s online presence before making a decision”. Like my previous source, many people’s opinions may rub others wrong and cause major problems that may result in a tragedy. There have been many incidents with this “Back-Stage Racism”. A recent example evolved two cops that ended up losing their jobs.

What had happened was, two cops were exchanging texts among each other now knowing that the government can track them. They eventually got fired and were put under investigation for (Like i stated above)”Back Stage Racism” meaning non- public.

This source relates back to my topic because it shows how they use they’re automated devises to communicate about these nasty topics.

Scrolling down the page i read that, “Hate crime is difficult to tackle for lots of reasons. Some of the groups that are most targeted are also those who have the least confidence in the police and public authorities” meaning that those who are targeted or most likely to be African American, those who are most noticed by the police. Many blacks are resisting that phone call to police, fearing that the blame be targeted towards them. That’s what i understood from it. this source correlated with my topic because it talks deeply about they racial/ ethnic groups of people that are mostly being targeted through social media. The interesting thing about this source that i didn’t findin any of  my other sources was this this one talks about how not only does social media talk about  hate crimes rised by social media, but also its can stop it. a great example is amber alerts. sirens go off on everyone phone through the community alerting people of a kidnap that had just taken place. this way, as soon as anyone finds the suspect and the car thats being driven, a search can proceed and the child can be returned to the parents.

This article helps me with my research topic revolving around Race and Discrimination because it provides in-depth research about the largely controversial concerns that’s happening in our society today. This source focuses on many other forms of discrimination such as Social discrimination, Sexual discrimination, Discrimination based on sexual orientation, and Racial and Ethnic Discrimination. Many studies have been done to determine who gets the job.  There has been a study done to see who, among black and white people, gets that job call back. Four types of people have been examined Both Black Felons \and Non-Felons, as well as White Felons and  Non-Felons. as you can see above, Both white felons and non- felons are n=more likely to receive that callback from a job that they’ve applied due to this inconvenience to black people. they are ore likely to get a job. and than are quickly labeled and judged for not having that job. unfortunately society targets and labels people. so of course it’d be more of a struggle for blacks to get money and jobs which may result in crimes. (theft, murder, and even homicide) may result due to lack of income entering a family household.

9) New Technologies of Resistance

Hatch, Anthony Ryan. “New Technologies of Resistance.” Radical History Review, vol. 2017, no. 127, Jan. 2017, pp. 125-132. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1215/01636545-3690906.

In this Scholarly Article, i found that Increased technology transformations resulted in a large amount of increased discrimination within mainly, the African American Culture, many may not see it but advance technology (social media wise has creates such a dangerous environment to many minority groups all across the united states.

  • African Americans face ongoing technological assault in the United States most visibly at the hands of state agents. Technological transformations that have simultaneously enabled the oppression of African Americans have also shaped African American resistance movements in the United States.

Reading this makes me wonder why? why do people judge on others 100% equal to themselves. If both sad and fascinating that people believe their lives are more superior over others.

All the sources stated/ Listed above relate to social Media and technology because it shows how people use WiFi/ internet connecting devices to Project they’re hate and negativity throughout the social interface/ world.

Conclusion:

My research went exceptionally well. There were many ideas projected by many people that i have puzzled together to create this section of the blog post. the findings i found were not really surprising because i have been looking into this subject for a while now and shoot, i experience this discrimination as well s many other people. It just reminded me of how messed up out social systems are. Its fascinating to see how someone can discriminate against others who are perfectly equal to them. i dont understand how of=r why these racist individuals feel obligates or think its the new ting to do to be overly disrespectful and discriminatory towards another culture, race, religion, ethnicity , etc..

I noticed many people learn from those of higher social status fr class. for example our current president. they see him talking so negatively about minority groups so then they start to pick up on that.

Being racist or discriminating against someone because of their background or culture is  not a good look. Stay kind my friends.
