Communication

How Technology Effects Communication with family, friends, and community.

By Kole Knutsen

Introduction

Throughout the history of the world people have strived to make communication better, faster and more convenient. Many people have gone and done exactly that. Today communication can be done is seconds within a touch of a button and talk to someone from across the country. No more hand written letters or calling from a home phone connected to a wire. The world has changed from waiting maybe weeks to talk to someone, to everything being in an instant. People today are always on a screen and always on a rush. Technology is rapidly advancing and with communication its almost at its peak where it cant get any faster.

Throughout my research I have learned a lot about what people plan on doing in the future to communicate. People are pursuing on combining technology and humans. Also with rapid advancement in technology people could find it difficult to communicate and socialize with others. This could effect how people can learn as well as perform in the real world. Communication is the very foundation people live on to interact with each other. Image result for picture of communication technology advancing

1-Communication Technology and Culture: Analysing Selected Cultural Dimensions and Human Development Indicators.

Musambira, George, and Jonathan Matusitz. “Communication Technology and Culture: Analysing Selected Cultural Dimensions and Human Development Indicators.” International Journal of Technology Management & Sustainable Development 14.1 (2015): 17-28. Web.

This article talks about Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, individualism-collectivism and masculinity-femininity, and selected indicators of the Human Development Report (HDR). Having cellphones subscriptions, the internet use and telephone mainlines can be used to assume the wealth and development of a country.  Musambira, George and
Matusitz, Jonathan used about 53 nations that Hofstede’s examined and they found that it did have correlation between individualism and collectivism but nothing on masculinity or femininity.

I believe this source is trustworthy and factual because it as made by two professors who have experience in these fields. I believe this article is particularly interesting because of the study they were overlooking. They figured out that the correlation that countries with more development the people and culture has more individualism where as less developed countries were more collective and together. This makes me believe that this is a very reliable source.

2- The Art of Living with ICTs: The Ethics–Aesthetics of Vulnerability Coping and Its Implications for Understanding and Evaluating ICT Cultures.

Coeckelbergh, Mark. “The Art of Living with ICTs: The Ethics–Aesthetics of Vulnerability Coping and Its Implications for Understanding and Evaluating ICT Cultures.” SpringerLink. Springer Netherlands, 19 Oct. 2015. Web. 14 June 2017.

This essay talks about how people are starting to feel vulnerable about how Information & communicative technology (ICT) is taking over peoples lives and what people are going to cope with that vulnerability. People believe that to cope  wit this they should focus on art or ethics but that’s not the case since lots of facts point towards finding a way to live with technology as an alternative to cope.

I believe this is a trustworthy source because in the article Coeckelberg uses many outside sources for his facts he’s gathered. I really like what he says because in his argument he talks about how we are vulnerable to technology but we also have the choice to be. This peaked my interest and made me read more in depth into this, but it also reminds me of Nicholas Carr.  He wrote the book The Glass Cage, about technology and what it has been doing or will do to people in the future.

3- Popular Screen Culture and Digital Communication Technology in Literacy Learning: Toward a New Pedagogy of Cosmopolitanism.

This Scholarly journal talks about how our screen culture is in line with children engagement levels. It also discusses about the capabilities of the this with smartphones for literacy learning and potential digital communication towards a new pedagogy of Cosmopolitanism. Jane Mills is an Associate Professor with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) University of Kent-at-Canterbury; Ph.D. University of Western Sydney School of the Arts & Media. Bill green is a Emeritus Professor at Charles Sturt University · School of Teacher Education.

I believe this is a very trustworthy source because these two people work at a college in their respective fields. I found it very interesting that many children that actually used smartphones had a longer period of focus when it came down to just one screen. It was very interesting to read and gave me lots of insight on what screens can do.

4- Shaping Youth Discourse About Technology: Technological Colonization, Manifest Destiny, and the Frontier Myth in Facebook’s Public Pedagogy.

Freishtat, Richard L., and Jennifer A. Sandlin. “Shaping Youth Discourse About Technology: Technological Colonization, Manifest Destiny, and the Frontier Myth in Facebook’s Public Pedagogy.” Educational Studies 46.5 (2010): 503-23. Web.

This scholarly article is quite long about 20 pages and is about how technology is shaping the path the youth use technology. This was written for educational studies about how the youth will be getting educated by Facebook and not from normal means like in school. This shows how the social norms could be effected by how people interact or communicate through Facebook.

I believe this to be one of my better sources that is trustworthy because it was published for Educational Studies, what is really big. What I found most interesting about this article is that the youth that are apart of this are the trailblazers for how people will continue to communicate and act accordingly to how they first started interacting with technology like Facebook. Also I found this pretty hard to read with lot of fancy words that I had to look up, but I learned a lot.

5- Ethical Issues for Psychologists Using Communication Technology: An Australian Perspective on Service Provision Flexibility

Davis, Andrew W. “Ethical Issues for Psychologists Using Communication Technology: An Australian Perspective on Service Provision Flexibility.” Professional Psychology: Research and Practice 45.5 (2014): 303-08. Web.

This article talks about how technology is making the ethical part of this communication process harder then it really is. In todays day psychologists have a code of conduct for client confidentiality but because of these new technologies its making it harder to do that. with risks and unwanted problems made by the ethical standards of a computer it makes their jobs harder. Also with the speed that people are communicating at its harder for psychologists to make the best ethical decisions because of this. This was written by Andrew W. Davis, who got an honor BA for science psychology and business psychology from Monash University.

The style he is writing is very formal and has many facts on how this would effect psychologists. This author is trying argue for confidentiality that is so hard to come by with technology today with hackers and with the speed everything is going.

6-Humanity On Speed

Mihranian, Elise. “Humanity On Speed.” Juniata Voices 12.3p (2012): 91-93. Web. 14 June 2017.

This journal talks about how people are living life faster then ever and how this is effecting our way of life, the quality, and relationships.  These are normally sacrificed with the speed that everyone is addicted to live on. The author is Mihranian, Elise. The style of this article is more on the lesser side of most intellectual scholarly sources and this journal isn’t so long compared to other journals.

What this author is trying to argue is that technology is rapidly advancing the speed of these contraptions are too. They are getting so fast that people could start losing track of what’s important in real life like family and friends. The price of fast communication could be more than we signed up for and effect our quality of life.

7-Sight: Contact Lenses with Augmented Reality- Futuristic Video.

Sight: Contact Lenses with Augmented Reality- Futuristic Video. Dir. Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo. Perf. Ori Golad and Deborah Aroshas. Published on Jul 29, 2012.

This short film is about what Augmented reality could be like in our future. It shows a man who is working out but looking in his eyes like he’s skydiving. In this short film it shows the awkwardness with how these two people who are on a date. They never met in person and take hints from what their contacts say to do. In reality the man is just listening to a computer ordering him what to do. This was made by  Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo. They are some students who did this video for their own art project for Bezaleal academy.

I feel the directors of this short film anted to show the audience a real life experience of what augmented reality would look like and how close it really is to reality. They also wanted to show how communication kind of disappeared because he man didn’t know what to do himself. Or what technology could make what communication will be.

8- “What Happens When You Push This?: Toward a History of the Not-So-Easy Button

Plotnick, Rachel. “What Happens When You Push This?: Toward a History of the Not-So-Easy Button.” Information & Culture 50.3 (2015): 315-38. Web.

This article talks about how people are starting to become less complex with how they communicate or just interact with each other. This is all because of the idea of a button that people made to make life easier. People believe its a frontier for communication, but this article talks about how people could not be ready to handle the complexities and challenges that life brings them. This as written by Rachel plotnick, who had a PHD.

This author I believe is very trust worthy because she is a doctor and seems to have experience in this field. I fell like the Author is trying to articulate and get people to notice what using a button would do to people. It has made people less capable then ever instead of making life easier.

9-“Electric Involvement: Identity Performance in Children’s Informal Digital Writing

Merchant, Guy. “Electric Involvement: Identity Performance in Children’s Informal Digital Writing.” Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education 26.3 (2005): 301-14. Web.

This article talks about how children today are identified by how successful they are with electronics. this study goes and shows to how children talk with electronics and how they interact with their own type of language to communicate faster or more efficiently. This article was made by Guy Merchant. The style is a little informal but only because of how the study is about children and how they talk. This article goes and talks about how I fell communication is going.

I believe this source is pretty reliable because its a scholarly source.  I also believe that the  author of this article is trying to imply how peoples social popularity is dependent on how well how much time they spend on this technology or social media. Because of this I found this very interesting to read. This is a very insightful article because the depth it goes into the subject. It also helped me understand more about how teens communicate with technology.

10-‘Virtual’ Intimacies? Families Communicating across Transnational Contexts.

Wilding, Raelene. “‘Virtual’ Intimacies? Families Communicating across Transnational Contexts.” Global Networks 6.2 (2006): 125-42. Web.

This article talks about how Family member go and communicate transnationally. Or even if they do and how they go and do that. This goes to show how the people render what types of communication are sought after more. This was written by Rafael Wilding. The style of this is more towards which (ICT) is more valuable than other because of the speed and quickness of communicating.

This journal is very insightful I felt with how it explained its argument in a way best possible. It talks about how families communicate  cross country or if they do, what type of device they used. For example most families during this time went  more with home phones instead of today where everyone has a hand held device. People were more selective because of the technology available to them. What you would likely learn from this journal is that how people communicated was normally through what was available to them and how they used it.

Conclusion:

The findings I have found are very surprising for what I first believed it would be about. What I have found is that with technology advancing people aren’t really changing. I mean they are changing in a different language barrier or slang. But children are actually doing better in school even with a shorter attention span. Its surprising that people are doing better with technology. But there were some bumps as in the way like how the  youth is acting based off of communication devices. They are acting less mature and this is effecting how children act in our culture. Lastly What I have  acquired through my extensive research is that  technology has made many cultures work faster and quicker then  ever before but people have only gotten more impatient from this. Communication is at a  all time record at speed but will it speed up any more and what would those next steps be?
