Imagine if you are an extraterrestrial scientist from planet Kepler-186f and are on course to planet earth, how do you observe it? What are you going to write in your scholarly journal that is going to be read by your colleagues from other star systems? The answer is culture.
Scientist has concluded that us humans, homo sapiens, has existed in this world for at least 200,000 years. In those 200,000 years, our species has successfully conquered the planet and made ourselves the dominant species on earth. Being the dominant species, we ought to leave major footprints in earth’s history, and we have.
People study other societies and civilization from their culture. We define culture as a social aspects of human society that define our lives. They are behaviors and beliefs that are taught in certain ethnicity, social and age group. Culture can include the way we dress, how we interact with one another based on social norms, how we treat others with our verbal and body language and how we identify ourselves. Cultures differ from one group to another. There are many factors that affect how culture are shaped. For example, location, climate, race, and history are just a few of the many elements that form a certain culture. The lifestyle of people living in a village on a mountain may differ drastically compared to the lifestyle of someone who lives in a big city. Culture between 2 big cities could also differ even though they’re both big cities. Culture is a very complex thing that cannot be defined with a simple algorithm, and it is very crucial part of our everyday lives.
There are many types of culture, one of them is material culture, like the entertainment industry, fashion, and medicine. There is also abstract culture, like language, identity, and race. Even though our group has only done research on 5 subtopics of culture, those are only a little dot of the whole spectrum of culture, but we think those 5 has a very big impact on our lives and that is why we chose them.
